The third graders are no longer primary students but are now on the intermediate grade level.  They will be exposed to and learn an extensive variety of vocabulary at every subject area.  Students will read and distinguish different forms of literature and different types of writing styles and strategies.They wll be given many opportunities for oral speaking.  The math skills they learn in third grade are very important because they will remain with them for a life time.  Some skills may be challenging but your children are up to the task.

For math the students will review and learn addition and subtraction up to five digits.  They wll also learn to round numbers up 10,000 to the nearest ten,
hundred, thousand.  Know multiplication facts 2-9 and multiply a number up to four digits.  The students will also be able to divide a number up to four digits.  Third grade will explore fraction parts, add and subtract simple fractions with like denominators.  A variety of measurement activities are taught such as calendaring, appropriate time an event wll take, elapsed time,liquid measurement, identify types of angles,polygons and geometric patterns.  We will also cover some statistics and simple probability.

In third grade students will discover how our early native americans lived long ago.  We will identify their religious beliefs, customs, and various folklore. They will discover how their physical environment influenced the typ[es of food and dwellings.  The students will describe the physical and human geography with the use of maps, charts, and photographs.  They will also be able to identify geographical features found in our regions. Students will draw from historical community resources to organize the sequence of events in history.

Reading is a necessary componate for life.  The students will be able to demonstrate comprehension by identifying answers in the text,distinguish main idea and supporting details.  They will understand the theme and plot of the story.In writing they will create a paragraph, develop a topic sentence which includes supporting facts and details.  Third grade will also include writing formal and informal letters in cursive. All parts of speech will be covered.  The students will take a weekly spelling test.  Third grade will plan and present poems and plays.

Students will learn scripture and christian life.They will also learn the seven sacrements, ten commandments, and the four marks of the church.  The students will also learn amonthly schoolwide prayer.  Experience the liturgical seasons, such as Lent, Advent, and Christmas.
